SERT stands for School Energy and Recycling Team. This group does many things to help the environment. SERT helps with techniques and processes of recycling and helps raise awareness about recycling. We also go around and check recycling bins and trash cans to see if people have recycled properly. Recycling is important enough that everyone should practice doing it. Only 5% of the plastic is recycled worldwide. That’s really disappointing and bad for our environment.

Plastic cannot bio-degrade and can only break down into smaller and smaller pieces until it becomes just a small particle. Well, who cares about recycling plastic? Well, if you don’t, you should because plastic in the environment can indirectly affect you. The plastic that we do not recycle and just throw away or litter, starts to break down into smaller pieces. These pieces are eaten by animals that we eat. Plastic is made using hundreds of different toxic chemicals. As the plastic is eaten by animals, the chemicals are absorbed into their skin and body and then that gets eaten by us. That just means that we are poisoning ourselves through the act of not recycling. “That’s why I’m a vegetarian…” , you say? Well, these chemicals also are absorbed into the plants that we eat and even the water that we drink. Recycling is very important and the SERT works to raise awareness of this.

There are many reasons why we should recycle, but that was just one. If you need more of a reason than the fact that you are poisoning yourself by not recycling, then you can go look it up. If you care about the environment, you can help by recycling. Tell your friends and family to recycle and help raise awareness.
