Sans Gets Sick (Underfell – A Fan Story)

Jadah Walker

Sans woke up freezing. He never gets cold, ever. He tried to snuggle back down into his blanket and bed, but he sat up straight when he heard Papyrus yelling at him to get up. Sans slowly put on his shoes and two extra sweaters under his coat to try and warm up. He zipped it up and put the hood on before heading down to his brother.

“WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG!? YOU’RE SO PATHETIC! TRY TO KEEP UP.” Papyrus sneered and headed out into the snow. Sans usually would have been able to say some kind of pun back just to tick off his brother, but he was too tired to care.

“sorry, boss.” He answered softly and headed after his brother. The two reached Papyrus’ post and Papyrus went straight to improving his traps for humans.

“GET TO YOUR POST, RUNT. KEEP WATCH FOR A HUMAN AND DON’T FALL ASLEEP. GOT IT?” Papyrus said over his shoulder to Sans. Sans left without a word and trudged down the path to his station. The wind seemed to cut right through his coat and extra layers. He could say he was even “chilled to the bone.” He weakly smiled at his own pun and finally reached his post.

Time seemed to have stopped and Sans kept getting colder and colder. He tried to stack hotdogs, but his hands were shaking too much. The world around him seemed to get blurry, but he couldn’t tell if it was the snow falling or his own sight. He couldn’t handle it anymore. He didn’t care if Papyrus found his post empty, Sans was going back to the house. He tried to take his shortcut, but his magic wouldn’t work and Sans lost his breath trying. Sans began to wobble down the path and hoped that Papyrus would be too busy with his traps to notice him.  Sans was barely able to put one foot in front of the other when Papyrus’ post came into view. He could only see the red and black of his brother’s outline. He heard Papyrus say something, but he couldn’t understand what.

“…p-papyrus…..” Sans whispered as he felt himself fall forward and his world go black.

Papyrus had just finished his latest trap when he saw Sans coming up the path.

“WHAT DOES HE THINK HE’S DOING?” Papyrus began to walk over and tell Sans to go back to his post when he stopped in his tracks. Sans was hunched over as he walked and his hands were clutching his chest. A terrifying image flashed through Papyrus’ mind and he began to walk faster. “SANS?”  His voice lost its anger and fear began to creep in. Sans didn’t answer, but began to fall forward. “SANS!!!” Papyrus yelled and ran to his brother. He caught him just in time, in his arms. “SANS!?” Papyrus cradled Sans in his arms and pushed Sans’ hood back. Sans was breathing hard in short pants. His cheeks were flushed a deep red and sweat was on his forehead. Papyrus froze and the image of Sans with a slash down his chest came back. “I ORDER YOU TO OPEN YOUR EYES! DO YOU HEAR ME?!…..please…..” Papyrus shouted and finished with a small whisper. Only the wind seemed to answer his pleas.

“….p-paps….?” Sans whispered opening his eyes halfway. Papyrus hugged Sans closer and smiled a genuine smile. Sans forehead was hot against his cheek as he hugged him.

“ YOU BONEHEAD…IT’S JUST A STUPID FEVER…. DON’T EVER SCARE ME LIKE THAT AGAIN…. WE’RE GOING BACK TO THE HOUSE .” Papyrus said lifting Sans up and walking back. Sans was still freezing and shaking, but he closed his eyes and smiled. His brother really did care for him.
