The Lunar Chronicles Series Review

The Lunar Chronicles Series Review

Eva Kung-Bi

The Lunar Chronicles are a series of fairy tale re-tellings with an awesome, action-packed, sci-fi twist. The chronicles consist of four books; Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter, along with Fairest, a novella told from the villain’s point of view. And OH MY GOODNESS THIS SERIES IS AMAZING!

The first book, Cinder, is an action-packed, sic-fi adventure that takes place in New Beijing. At this point the world has had many technological advances, and is experiencing world peace. You may ask how this is possible, and I will get to that in a second. The story follows our main character, Cinder, who is a cyborg. She has a metal leg, arm, and a computer in her brain. Cinder is still human, though unable to blush or shed tears, she can still feel human emotions and has a “soul”. However, the society she lives in discriminates against cyborgs, calling them second-rate citizens. Cinder is forced into servitude by her step-mother and step-sister (sound familiar?), and longs for her freedom.

Remember what I said about world peace? This is only possible because the world leaders are facing a much bigger enemy than each other. Sometime in the future, humans have colonized the moon. These people, known as “Lunars” have somehow evolved and are now able to manipulate other’s minds with their “bio-electricity” to make people feel different emotions and do different things. They are lead by an “evil queen” who manipulates people’s minds to keep power.

That’s just about all I can say with out spoiling the book, but trust me, THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! There’s tons of hype surrounding this book, and I must say, it definitely lives up to it. Marisa Meyer’s writing is fabulous, and the way she weaves the traditional fairy tale elements into the action-packed, sic-fi, and mildly political science-y story is absolutely amazing. I have to say, the books get progressively better, and by Winter, you’re crying because there won’t be any more books. The characters are absolutely awesome, and the setting and world building is fantastic. There are not enough good things to say about this series. If you enjoy space travel science fiction, and fairy tales, you will love The Lunar Chronicles.
